An Ancient Tradition: The 40 Hours of Prayer Devotion
The 40 Hours of Prayer devotion is an ancient tradition that dates back to at least the XVI century and is dear to St. Carlo Borromeo and St. Philip Neri. It consists of a devotion of continuous prayer made for 40 hours before the Blessed Sacrament solemnly exposed in the Church.

According to the tradition, the 40 Hours of Prayer devotion mirrors the 40 hours spent by Jesus in His sepulcher between His death on the Cross and His Resurrection and the 40 days spent by Jesus in the desert.
That’s why the 40 Hours are often planned as a prayerful preparation for the time of Lent and Easter.

Last year, our Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth was blessed with a Eucharistic Congress that concluded with a wonderful procession, showing our faith, gratitude, and love for Christ’s presence in the Blessed Sacrament.
It is our desire to keep alive all the graces that were granted to us thanks to the Eucharistic Congress and for this reason we will offer our 40 Hours for the good of our Archdiocese.

Everyone is invited to participate and offer their time of prayer for our local Church and our Archbishop, spending time and honouring our Lord Jesus Christ, truly present in the Blessed Sacrament.

May the Lord make bloom the seed of light planted in all our hearts in Baptism!
